10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is coming up soon! To get the ‘Thanksgiving Spirit”, here are some fun facts that will boost you knowledge of Thanksgiving that we doubt you have ever heard before!

1. The pilgrims didn’t use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers.

2. Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States.

3. Sarah Josepha Hale, an American magazine editor, persuaded Abraham Lincoln to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday. She is also the author of the popular nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”

4. Turkey has more protein than chicken or beef.

5. The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog.

6. Although, Thanksgiving is widely considered an American holiday, it is also celebrated on the second Monday in October in Canada.

7.Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.

8. At the first Thanksgiving dinner, deer was believed to be served, not turkey.

9. Thanksgiving is what inspired TV dinners in 1953. Swanson wanted to find a way to make use of all of the Thanksgiving leftovers.
