The Importance of Sleep

It’s that time of the school year. Your stack of homework is almost as tall as you, and between play rehearsal, sport practice and other ECAs, you just can’t seem to get enough sleep. Whether it be study or video games, we have all felt that extreme fatigue at some point. Counting sheep doesn’t work, and caffeine just doesn’t seem to suffice. If your eyelids are getting heavier as you’re reading this, wake up! I have some helpful tips to getting enough sleep.

It’s important for us to get at least eight hours of good sleep each night. How do we do this?

1. Set a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at a set time each day. This way, you will feel more energised and refreshed.

2. Power naps. If you just can’t stay awake and are in desperate need for a nap, limit it to thirty minutes. If you sleep for too long in the afternoon, you may find it difficult to fall asleep at night.

3. Get regular exercise. It’s amazing how using energy gives you more energy – and a better night’s sleep! Try taking a walk or a jog for thirty minutes each day. This, along with a balanced diet, will help you sleep better.

3. Relax before bed. Turn off your phone, pour yourself a hot cup of tea and eliminate loud noises. This is your way of telling your body that it’s time to sleep.
